Digital filters represent a method to manipulate digital signals such that the resulting signal follows certain constraints as specified by the designer. The constraints may be of very different nature and strongly depend on the application for which the filter is designed. After specifying such constraints for digital filters the problem of optimizing the implementation of the filter under these constraints arises immediately. The latter two problems lead to interesting problems in combinatorial optimization. The first goals of our group in this project are to develop algorithms for the integer optimization problems that occur when filter coefficients must be rounded, and to develop a tool for consistent specification of filter design problems.
