Dear colleagues,

Although the new year is not that young anymore, we would still like to
wish you a happy, healthy, and successful 2016. In the first newsletter
of this year, we will inform you about about the following topics:

  1. GAMM Junior Class of 2016
  2. GAMM-DMV Meeting 2016
  3. Newly Elected Board of SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science
  4. EMS Summer School on "Modelling, Analysis and Simulation: Crime and Image Processing"
  5. BMS Summer School on "Mathematics and Computation in Imaging Science"
  6. New Job Openings
  7. Upcoming Workshops and Conferences

GAMM Junior Class of 2016

Ten new GAMM Juniors have been elected, and we are very happy and proud
to report that three(!) of them belong to our community:

  • Sandra Keiper (TU Berlin)
  • Dr. Johannes Nagler (Universität Passau)
  • Rafael Reisenhofer (Universität Bremen)

Congratulations to the three new GAMM Juniors!

We encourage everyone to check whether your university has a GAMM
representative, which will then coordinate and collect the nominations
for next class of GAMM Juniors. For more information, please see,
e.g., https://www.gamm-juniors.de.

2.) GAMM-DMV Meeting 2016

The upcoming GAMM Annual Meeting in 2016 in Braunschweig taking place
from March 7-11 will be quite exciting. This will be a joint
meeting with the DMV, hence we also look forward to a large variety
of talks from other areas of mathematics not present in GAMM. But,
even more importantly, our area is represented by a plenary talk, a
Young Researcher's Minisymposium, as well as our traditional
section:

  • Emmy Noether Lecture: Gerlind Plonka-Hoch (Göttingen)
  • YR3: Dedicated regularization for variational image processing,
Organizers: Martin Holler (Graz) and Michael Möller (München).
  • S21: Mathematical signal and image processing, Organizers: Martin
    Ehler (Wien), Dirk Lorenz (Braunschweig)

More information can be found on the webpage:

3.) Newly Elected Board of SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science

The newly elected board of the SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science
with its
term starting from January 1, 2016 on, consist of

  • Chair: Eric Miller (Tufts University)
  • Vice Chair: Gitta Kutyniok (TU Berlin)
  • Program Director: Omar Ghattas (University of Texas, Austin)
  • Secretary: Julianne Chung (Virginia Tech)

4.) EMS Summer School on "Modelling, Analysis and Simulation: Crime and Image Processing"

We would like to make you aware of this EMS Summer School which is
organized by
Gitta Kutyniok & Barbara Wagner (TU Berlin) as well as Andreas Münch & Jared
Tanner (Oxford) from July 4th until July 8th, 2016 at the Mathematical
Institute
in Oxford. The deadline for applications of PhD students and early career
researchers is March 6, 2016!

In this summer school we focus on the mathematical topics of crime and image
processing which currently attract a lot of attention both from mathematical
research and from real-world applications, but where these two sides are
rarely
taught together. The summer school will combine a traditional research
school
that introduces the participants to mathematical topics, theory and
techniques
of current interest with a typical modelling week, where the
participants will
apply these techniques to specific real-world problems. These problems
will be
investigated by the participants in small teams during several days of
hands-on
group work. The intention is to provide the participants with a working
knowledge of multiple approaches and an understanding of how they can be
combined to address complex modelling problems in multiple application
areas.

For more information, we refer to the summer school website:

5.) BMS Summer School on "Mathematics and Computation in Imaging Science"

We would like to make you aware of this BMS Summer School which is
organized by
Michael Hintermüller (HU Berlin) and Gitta Kutyniok (TU Berlin) from
July 25th
until August 5th, 2016 at TU Berlin and HU Berlin. The deadline for
applications
of PhD students and early career researchers is March 31, 2016!

The aim of the Summer School is to introduce contemporary methods in
imaging science to a broad audience ranging from graduate students to
postdocs and junior faculty. The main themes will be analytical and
approximation theoretic aspects as well as algorithmic and computational
aspects of image processing.

For more information, we refer to the summer school website:

6.) New Job Openings

7.) Upcoming Workshops and Conferences

1.) Joint DMV and GAMM Annual Meeting, Braunschweig, 7.-11.03.2016
2) HD-Tomo Days, Technical University of Denmark, 6.-8.4.2016
3) EMS Summer School on "Modelling, Analysis and Simulation: Crime
and Image Processing", Oxford, 4.-8.7.2016
4) Chemnitz Symposium on Inverse Problems, 22.-23.9.2016
5) The 6th International Conference on Scale Space and Variational Methods
in Computer Vision, Denmark, 4.-8.6.2017

Finally, if you have any suggestions or comments, we would be very
happy if you could let us know.

With best regards,

Martin Burger and Gitta Kutyniok
