Mathematical Signal and Image Processing (MSIP)

Newsletter 05/2013

Dear colleagues,

We hope those of you who attended the workshop on "Advances in Mathematical Image Processing" in the beautiful Annweiler, which was also our annual Activity Group meeting, had a safe trip back home. We would like to particularly thank all who participated actively in this workshop and gave very interesting talks as well as presented carefully designed posters.

In addition to a short report on the workshop and the General Assembly, in this newsletter we would also like to pose a call for contributing topics for the 2013 report of our GAMM-Activity Group.

GAMM MSIP-workshop in Annweiler

The main highlights at the workshop were the three plenary talks by Christoph Schnoerr, Christine de Mol, and Jan Modersitzki. We also had the pleasure to listen to about 25 very interesting contributed talks as well as enjoy carefully designed posters during the poster session. It was particularly nice that various different research directions in the area of signal- and image processing were presented. Over 50 participants attended our workshop with a significant number of also young researchers. The workshop photo as well as additional information can be found here: www.mathematik.uni-kl.de/events/aip/

General Assembly at GAMM MSIP-workshop

In the beginning, in deep sorrow, we commemorated our friend and companion Bernd Fischer, who passed away on July 15, 2013. Jan Modersitzki, his colleague and close friend at the University of Luebeck, gave a commemorative address honoring the achievements of Bernd Fischer for the community of mathematical signal and image processing. Bernd had founded and headed the Fraunhofer Project Group Image Registration and the Institute of Mathematics and Image Computing at the University of Luebeck.

The agenda of this General Assembly then consisted of the following items:

  1. Activity report
  2. Future activities
  3. Annual GAMM Meetings
  4. Miscellaneous

Item 1 was a report on diverse activities within our group, in item 2 mainly future workshops and conferences were discussed, during item 3 we discussed suggestions for plenary speakers, organizers of our section and of a Young Researcher Minisymposium for the Annual GAMM Meeting 2015 in Lecce/Italy, and item 4 consisted of a discussion of the problem of the low percentage of GAMM members in our activity group, of several open positions as GAMM representative of a university, and of the idea to award an annual prize for the best PhD thesis or a best paper written by young researchers in our research area.

For a detailed "Minutes of the Meeting", we refer here.

Report of our Activity Group

We need to submit the report for 2013 of our activity group by the end of October. For this, we encourage you to inform us about particular activities (prizes/honors, workshops , etc.), you would like us to mention. Please send us such data by October 20, 2013.

With best regards,

Gitta Kutyniok, Gerlind Plonka, and Gabriele Steidl
