Contents

Modern engineering and management requires the replacement of traditional trial and error approaches by formal methods. This teaching module addresses this issue. It teaches mathematical modelling and solution techniques, that lead to a clear understanding of the quantitative aspects of manufacturing processes and of their relations to resource and budget constraints, market forces, and technological innovation. Students shall be enabled to understand the main mathematical techniques employed in this area and to judge their appropriateness for particular instances in production engineering and management. After completion of this module, students are qualified to deal with complex quantitative decisions in a systematic way by exploitation of the appropriate decision support tools.
