jReality in perspective

Post by ndroock1 » Sun 28. Mar 2010, 14:14

Five years ago or so I spent a lot of time learning java3D and 3D programming in general, after having developed some apps I got busy on other things. I continued my work on 3D this year and I found out that Java3D was more or less frozen, i.e. in development for JavaFX, which isn't gaining much momentum imho. Since this project started well before the Oracle take-over of Sun who knows what the future of JavaFX will be.

I looked around for other, more alive alternatives and that's how I found jReality. So far so good.

Before Java3D I used Javaview somewhat. It looks as though Javaview has been abandoned as well. Does anyone know more about this?

Yes Java3D and JavaView I think on both development has stopped. I've been looking into both. I worked extensively with Java3D around 2000. I evaluated JavaView one year ago and didn't go for it simply because it looked dead. 3D Graphics and Java is a rather sad story these two things do not seem to match very well it seems.

I stumpled across a couple of game development focused Java 3D APIs that most of them sit on top of LWJGL and JOGL. So you might as well go straight to the lower APIs.

I choose jReality at the time because of it variety of different render backends not just JOGL (even though the software one requires some further polishing IMHO and bug fixing) and it still active development, free source code availability, a variety of on top functionality that becomes handy and good support.
