The polyhedral tiles of materials and the forces that shape them
Many materials – including most common metals – can be approximated as polyhedral tilings of space. Among the endless possibilities of tiles, why do some appear frequently while others only rarely, or never at all? This talk will describe recent work to explain how physical principles such as energy minimization and entropy maximization work together to determine the distribution of polyhedral tiles in these ubiquitous physical systems.
